Among the first questions that most people ask when they are faced with deciding whether or not to have weight loss surgery is "is gastric bypass surgery expensive?" While this is a commonly asked question, regretably, it is not an easy question to answer.

Gastric bypass surgery is a surgical procedure, requiring the services of many people including a surgeon, an anesthetist, a psychologist and various other specialists, as well as hospitalization for usually 2 to 3 days followed by a 2 to 6 week period of recovery. Gastric bypass surgery also comes in many different forms today and although the long-established Roux-en-Y procedure is still widely practiced, many other forms of surgery, especially laparoscopic stomach surgery, are growing in popularity.

In addition, Rather like many other kinds of surgery, gastric bypass surgery is not risk free and, whilst many people will cruise through the surgery, some will develop complications in hospital or while recovering which might increase the total cost of the operation considerably.

Against this background it can be seen that the cost is going to be high and is going to vary widely, but just how high is it and what kind of variation can be expected?

At lower end of the scale, minor surgery, such as gastric banding, without complications can be expected to cost approximately $20,000. This cost will rise to possibly as much as $35,000 for a complete gastric bypass procedure. Should complications are seen it is not at all easy to predict just what the further cost might be but it would not be unreasonable to think in terms of a total figure of $50,000.

Though gastric bypass surgery is not cheap, the good news is that, in most cases, a substantial part of this cost can be met by insurance. This will of course depend upon the kind of policy you hold and the terms and conditions of the policy and will sometimes involve something of an uphill battle with your insurance provider but, nevertheless, this is without doubt the first avenue that you should explore.
