Weight Loss Surgery: - Necessity or Luxury?

By: Jeff Neal

Are you looking to lose a major amount of weight? If so, you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery. For many people, who need to lose eighty pounds or more, this can be their last hope. They have tried diet pills, weight loss shakes and the latest fad diets with limited or short term results.

There are two main types of weight loss surgery to consider. Gastric Bypass and Lap-band surgery.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric Bypass surgery or Stomach Stapling is probably the one most people have heard about. Your surgeon uses staples to make a smaller pouch, and then reroutes the intestines to this area. This severely limits the amount of food you can eat at a time. Weight loss is very dramatic and barring other health conditions can really turn a patients life around.

Lap Band Surgery

Lap-band surgery is a newer version of weight loss surgery that is gaining in popularity. Instead of stapling the stomach, an adjustable band is used to make the stomach smaller. Because the band can be adjusted or easily removed, this weight loss surgery has more flexibility.

It would seem that once this type of weight loss surgery is performed everything would be great, but any medical procedure has drawbacks and side affects.

Some medical plans do not pay for this type of weight loss surgery, so cost can be a big factor in deciding to undergo these procedures. With costs ranging anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000 be sure to check with your insurance provider for their coverage guidelines.

If you are not a goal oriented person, you may find it hard to change the other mental and physical concepts needed to succeed. Nausea and pain should be expected, especially if you don't follow the guidelines and eat more than suggested.

The importance of speaking with a doctor or other health professional when considering any major health decision, such as weight loss surgery, should be your first priority. There are other weight loss options that may be better suited to your situation.
